Missouri to use grant to boost school lunch enrollment

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) -- Missouri education officials say a federal grant will help provide free lunches to more low-income students.

The state Department of Elementary and Secondary Education says it has received a grant for more than $70,000. The money will be used to help state officials notify schools about students are eligible for free lunches.

Currently, the Department of Social Services tells state education officials which students are eligible for the lunches. Schools then are told by the state education department. That happens once a year.

Education officials want to be able to automatically add students who become eligible for the program.
