Police ID truck driver fatally shot while making delivery in East St. Louis

(KMOV) – Police are investigating after a delivery truck driver was killed in East St. Louis.

East St. Louis Police responded to a shooting around 6 a.m. Thursday at 26th and McCasland. Upon arrival, officers found 40-year-old Truman L. Smith, of Irondale, Missouri laying in the roadway next to his delivery truck with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Smith was transported to Kenneth Hall Hospital in East St. Louis where he died.

Investigators said Smith was making a delivery to the Fresh Warehousing business, located at 2601 McCasland. Smith was out of his truck in front of the business when he was approached by a male black suspect, armed with a handgun, who shot Smith during an apparent robbery. After the shooting the suspect ran south on 26th Street from the scene.
