WASHINGTON (AP) -- Growing up in East St. Louis, Sen. Richard Durbin had a baseball mitt with a copy of Stan Musial's signature.
Now the Illinois Democrat has the real thing.
Musial was honored by the White House on Tuesday with a Presidential Medal of Freedom. Durbin, a lifelong fan, attended the event then got his glove -- which he's held on to for decades -- signed by Musial, known as Stan "The Man" Musial.
Durbin says the mitt, a Stan Musial Rawlings Special, was his most prized possession growing up.
A Hall of Fame player with the St. Louis Cardinals, Musial served in the Navy during World War II and has been active in the St. Louis community. The Medal of Freedom is the highest civilian honor the White House can bestow.
