The Cardinals in Jupiter, Florida for spring training. Our own Brian Feldman is in the middle of all the action. Brian will provide constant updates, so check back through the day for the very latest news.
Feb. 16, 11:52 a.m. - DeWitt says they made a substantial offer to him. Many years. Lot of money. Not sure how the market will take shape after the season.
Feb. 16, 11:51 a.m. - No bridges were burned. Tony was pretty positive the whole time. Cards remain open for business. Respect Albert's wishes to let him focus on the 2011 season.
Feb 16, 11:48 a.m. - Key points from press conference. One offer was made by the team. It happened around the first of the year. Won't say how close or far away they were. Hopeful to keeping Albert but probably will have to compete against other clubs now.
Feb. 16, 11:17 a.m. - If the Cards go to the World Series then they have just 5 days before other teams can make offers. However if they don't make the playoffs or go out earlier then they obviously would have more time.
Feb. 16, 11:15 a.m. - Here's how it will work. Whenever the Cards season ends they have exclusive negotiating rights with Albert until 5 days after the World Series ends. That's when other teams can make offers to him.
Feb. 16, 11:04 a.m. - No deal has been reached. Cards confirm all negotiations will stop until the season ends. A deal was made...no word on what it was exactly.
Feb. 16, 10:42 a.m. - Press conference being set up as we speak in the multi purpose room of Roger Dean. Been told DeWitt will speak along with Mozeliak. Should be interesting. More to come.
Feb. 16, 10:24 a.m. - Now its just a waiting game for, hopefully, John Mozeliak and Bill DeWitt to address the media. When that will happen...no one knows. Should be within the next hour or so.
Feb. 16, 9:51 a.m. - Albert Pujols' truck has arrived. The thing? He's not in it. Had someone drive it up here for him. Shocker.
Feb. 16, 9:49 a.m. - More FOT's (friends of Tony) arriving. Today brings Dennis Eckersley.
Feb. 16, 9:46 a.m. - Brandon Dickson among the 4th group bullpen pitchers. An interesting guy. Had, statistically, the best year among AAA starters last year. Not viewed as a Major League candidate though.
Feb. 16, 9:39 a.m. - Helicopter just flew overhead at Roger Dean. Thought there was a chance Albert would parachute out and make his grand entrance. He didn't.
Feb. 16, 9:36 a.m. - Brian Tallet, Fernando Salas and PJ Walters throwing bullpen sessions now.
Feb. 16, 9:26 a.m. - Molina catching Franklin and saying "that's nasty" quite a lot. Sounds like a good bullpen session for the closer.
Feb. 16, 9:14 a.m. - Molina, Laird and Anderson are the 3 catchers in the bullpen. Looks like Anderson will be the de facto 3rd catcher...with Matt Pagnozzi now on the Rockies.
Feb. 16, 9:09 a.m. - Wainwright, Garcia and Westbrook throwing bullpens now. McClellan, Franklin and Snell up next.
Feb. 16, 8:51 a.m. - Tony does say he stands by what he said yesterday regarding the union. But he clarifies that if he was a part of the union that he would probably do the same thing. Though he doubts the union when it says it has had no contact with Pujols. TLR says he's too important.
Feb. 16, 8:49 a.m. - After making national headlines yesterday regarding the union Tony La Russa is very quiet today. Says he said all he needed to yesterday and has nothing else.
Feb. 16, 8:26 a.m. - Hearing now its more and more likely Albert will NOT be here today. Once the deadline passes GM John Mozeliak will speak and, possibly, Bill DeWitt Jr.
Feb. 16, 8:21 a.m. - Motte also said he loves all the guys in the bullpen like Boggs and McClellan. They were in each others' weddings this offseason. As far as performance it is great because they all have different styles that compliment each other.
Feb. 16, 8:16 a.m. - Did a 1-on-1 with Jason Motte. Knows that as good as last year was he can be even better this year. Says he used to be predictable in his early years because he only had confidence in his fastball. No more.
Feb. 16, 7:08 a.m. - Rumors abound that #5 won't be here today. He just might arrive tomorrow. Either way, John Mozeliak is expected to talk after the "deadline" passes.
