(KMOV) –  A man who said he was shot by a man who he tried to help in a ditch admits to fabricating that story; instead, the man says he took his loaded rifle to scare away a feral cat that had been going through his garbage, slipped on the mud, and shot himself in the hand.

"I'm sorry to all the Channel 4 viewers, but I was extremely embarassed," he says. "I didn't want to look like a young man who shot himself."

He originally filed a police report stating that he saw a man in a ditch along Highway 30 between NN and Dittmer Road. In the police report, the man said that the man in the ditch rolled over, pointed a rifle at him and demanded his wallet.

Officers conducted a manhunt for the suspect for several hours.

The man was arrested for filing a police report. He has not been charged yet.

Authorities plan to compile the costs of the manhunt and file for restitution.
