(KMOV.com) - The first plan for a medical marijuana farm in the Metro East has received preliminary zoning approval.

The St. Clair County Zoning Board of Appeals Monday night unanimously approved the plan submitted by Nature's Care.  The company is attempting to start a growing operation near Marissa on IL Route 13.

A 14 acre site has been selected, but a company partner says there would be about an acre of marijuana grown in a greenhouse.  The company plans to employee 30 workers and provide its own security, as well as pay for two law enforcement patrols and a squad car.

The Zoning Board is recommending the county approve a special use permit which is needed in the state application process.

The state's pilot medical marijuana program allows one cultivation center per state police district, which means one the Metro East can initially have one marijuana farm.

The St. Clair County Board is next to take up Nature's Care's proposal.  Those plans also need state approval before the company can start legally growing marijuana in the Metro East.
