Alton, Ill. teen shot, killed by gun he was 'playing with'

ALTON, Ill. -- An 18-year-old Alton, Illinois man died from an accidental gunshot wound while he was playing with a gun in his home, according to police.
The Madison County Coroner said Austin Wilcox, 18, of Alton was killed in the early morning hours of July 12, 2014.
Police said witnesses inside the apartment reported that Wilcox had recently obtained a semi-automatic handgun and had been playing with it. They said the gun was not functioning properly and would not fire. That’s when, according to police, they heard a gunshot.
Police found Wilcox seated in a living room chair and he was later pronounced deceased at the scene. He sustained a single gunshot wound to his head.
Toxicology tests for the presence of alcohol or drugs will be performed as police continue their investigation of the shooting.
