St. Louis (KMOV) – St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay appointed a new Recorder of Deeds on Monday following Sharon Carpenter’s resignation last week.

Jennifer Florida took the oath of office, which was administered by Circuit 22 Judge Steven Ohmer, on Monday morning. Florida will serve out the remainder of the Recorder’s term, which ends on Dec. 31, 2014.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported that Florida is married to a Slay assistant.

Carpenter decided to step down when her opponent in the Aug. 5 Democratic primary disclosed that Carpenter had hired a great-nephew for several summers. Missouri law requires any public office holder employing a relative within four degrees to forfeit office.

Carpenter said she hired the relatives but misinterpreted the nepotism statue.

On Friday, Carpenter said she still had plans to campaign for re-election.
