Game Log: Holliday's homer gives Cards comeback victory

(BaseballStL) -- Another home run, this time from Matt Holliday, gave the Cardinals their first lead of the game in the ninth inng after having trailed the Brewers by six runs after the second innings.

Holliday's sixth homer of the season came with two outs and on the first pitch he saw, driving it over the left field wall to cap an incredible rally from the Redbirds.

Trevor Rosenthal made the home run stand as he pitched the Cardinals to his 28th save of the season.

Kolten Wong continues to smash the ball since returning from the disabled list and another home run from Jhonny Peralta pulled the Cards within one run. They eventually tied the game with a four run sixth inning.

Wong took Gallardo deep for his fifth homer of the season to pull the Cardinals within three of the Brewers with the first hit of the inning. 

Matt Holliday then earned a seven pitch walk to bring up the dangerous Matt Adams and no outs, but the slugger struck out. 

Then Jhonny Peralta smashed the ball, his fourteenth homer of the season to pull the Cardins within one run 6-5.

Allen Craig and Jon Jay follwed that home run with back-to-back singles and a free pass to Tony Cruz. Pinch-hitter Oscar Taveras then grounded into a force out that scored Craig to tie the game.

A pair of Matts finally got the Cardinals on the board with some big hits in the fourth.

With one out, Matt Holliday doubled, putting a runner on base for the big hitting Matt Adams who homered. His eleventh of the season within four runs on the Brew Crew.

Jhonny Peralta followed it up with a single, but Allen Craig's struggles continue as he struck out and Jon Jay grounded out, squashing any hope the Cardinals had for another run.

The Brewers continued to knock Joe Kelly around into the second inning as they put two runners on base with no one out.

Kelly's counterpart, Yovani Gallardo, lead off the inning with a sinle into the center that was followed by another one from Carlos Gomez. Scotter Gennett then collected his second hit of the game, a big triple scoring both Gallardo and Gomez. 

Ryan Braun hit the second triple of the inning to score Gennett and push the Brewers lead to 6-0.

In only his first game back from the 60-day disabled list, things didn't start off well for Joe Kelly.

Upon delivering his second pitch, he plunked Carlos Gomez which was promptly followed by a line drive single from Scooter Gennett.

That brough up hot catcher Jonathon Lucroy, batting .323 and recently named starting cather of the NL All Star team with Yadier Molina huty. Gomez challenged Molina's replacement Tony Cruz with a successful double steal.

Then in a 10 pitch at-bat, Lubroy earned a free pass. Aramis Ramirez made Kelly pay with a sacrifice fly.

Ryan Bruan grounded out to first giving the Brewers runners on second and third with two outs. Kris Davis blasted a double into center fielder that scored both Gennett and Lucroy, extending the Brewers' lead to three. Kelly issued another walk in the inning to Lyle Overbay before getting Jean Segura to line out to center.
