Employee accused of stealing from north St. Louis Co. towing company

(KMOV.com) –  An employee is accused of stealing thousands from a towing company in Hazelwood.

Brian Kitchell, 50, has been charged with felony stealing. Authorities allege he stole at least $20,000 from A2B Towing.

Curtis Barks, who owns A2B, said Kitchell had been a trusted employee who was in charge of payroll and accounting. However, Barks said he recently noticed money was missing.

“Instead of getting dropped into a safe, he’d drop them into his pocket. He’d take the tow tickets, and hide them, or make them disappear,” Barks said.

Barks told News 4 he learned Kitchell worked with two other employees to divert the funds. Barks said some customers were actually undercharged for towing services.

“Unfortunately, if you want to look back at the bigger picture, the economy is terrible and people are desperate. He thought he could get away with it, and as we’ve always learned, sooner or later everyone gets caught,” said Captain Jim Hundanick with Hazelwood police.

Kitchell said his company has invested thousands of dollars to prevent another employee from committing a similar crime.
