Police: Cars being broken into in south St. Louis neighborhood

Posted: Updated:

(KMOV.com) - Police, aldermen, and residents are all working to beat a spike in grand theft auto reports in Tower Grove South.

Car thefts in Tower Grove South are up from eight reports in May to 26 reports in June, according to statistics from the city’s website.

Fran Ferris Moneigmann has heard of her neighbors’ cars being stolen too many times and doesn’t want to be the next victim.

“(I) park in front of my house. I have an automatic alarm, and if I don’t get to park in front of my house, I just pray,” said Ferris Moneigmann who lives on Lackland.

St. Louis Police spokesman Schron Jackson said a burglary squad has been assigned to the second policing district which includes Tower Grove South. Jackson also said it’s too early to tell if the squad is having an impact on the car thefts.

Aldermen Joe Vaccaro and Jennifer Florida say more police officers are needed in the area to curb the crime trend.  Both aldermen also encourage their constituents to get involved with neighborhood safety meetings and neighborhood watches.

“We have to be vigilant ourselves, police can’t be everywhere.  We have to call (crime) in ourselves,” said Vaccaro, 23rd Ward.

The city crime statistics for this report are from May 3rd to June 2nd and June 3rd to July 3rd.
