ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- A recently released controversial animated video that has gone viral takes aim at LEGO's partnership with oil giant Shell.
The video, produced using thousands of LEGOs by Greenpeace, is intended to show the dangers of Shell's oil drilling in the Arctic. The video's creator says the LEGO brand is helping to promote Shell propaganda.
LEGO sells a Shell-branded line and says, "a co-promotion contract like the one with Shell is one of many ways we are able to bring LEGO bricks into the hands of more children."
The statement by LEGO continued, "the Greenpeace campaign focuses on how Shell operates in a specific part of the world. We firmly believe that this matter must be handled between Shell and Greenpeace. We are saddened when the LEGO brand is used as a tool in any dispute between organizations."
A petition on Greenpeace.org has received more than 300,000 signatures. Greenpeace is an independent global campaigning organization that acts to change attitudes and behavior, to protect and conserve the environment and to promote peace, according to their website.
