(KMOV) – Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Granite City early Wednesday morning.
According to police, they received a call around 4:13 a.m. about an ongoing incident in the 3200 block of Edwardsville Road.
Two Granite City officers responded to the scene at an Easy Stop gas station. When officers arrived they found the 45-year-old suspect Stephen Minch, who made the 911 call, in a car behind the gas station.
When police approached the car the suspect pointed a gun at them. The officers instructed the suspect to put down his weapon and when he didn’t, the officers responded with deadly force. Police said 45-year-old Stephen Minch died on the scene, but he never fired his gun.
The Madison County Coroner's Office was also called to the scene.
Illinois State Police are now leading the investigation and trying to figure out why Minch called police in the beginning. Police say the suspect was from St. Charles and they don’t know why the man was in Granite City. The gas station was not open at the time of the incident.
Edwardsville Road/Route 162 was closed for about 40 minutes due to the shooting.
Illinois State Police will take their findings to the state's attorney who will deicde if the officers acted appropriately.
