(BaseballStL) -- Since being placed on the disabled list back on June 22, Jaime Garcia has faced numerous decision on how to deal with his persistent and nagging shoulder issues that continue to side-line the lefty.
"He's got a lot of people helping him make a decision. It's a tough spot," manager Mike Matheny commented. Matheny said they have consulted specialists and even those advisors are telling the southpaw different things.
"This goes beyond our abilities as coaches," Matheny said, "[We] understand that we have a very good medical staff in place and that's their purpose - figure out what the best result is."
Does that mean season ending surgery? Matheny said he hasn't gotten the sense from Garcia that any decision is a finality for left-hander.
"I think the sense I'm getting from him," he said, "he's trying to do what he can to be able to come back and pitch again."
Matheny compares Stanton to McGwire
Mike Matheny had extraordinary praise for Miami Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton comparing the 24-year-old to a fan favorite from the late '90s.
"Reminds me a lot of Mark McGwire," Matheny said, "I remember back in '98, [McGwire] was the only guy we ever came out of the clubhouse and watched out at batting practice."
Matheny continued by assessing the way in which Stanton hits his homers, 21 so far this season. He's projected to hit 39 with 115 RBI for the season.
"It's almost freakish."
