St. Louis County, Mo. (KMOV) – St. Louis County detectives are investigating after a police officer shot and killed a suspect following a chase, crash and struggle on a roadway early Saturday morning.
According to police, Pine Lawn officers pulled over a vehicle for a wanted person alert near Interstate 70 and Jennings Station Rd. During the traffic stop, the suspect’s vehicle prematurely left the scene and a chase began, police said.
"This vehicle came through at a very high rate of speed, driving very erratically through traffic," said Pine Lawn Director of Public Safety Anthony Gray. "I understand the officer actually clocked the driver going 90 in a 55."
Authorities ran the plates of the suspect's vehicle and found that the suspect had failed to return the car to a rental company.
Officers said the chase ended when the suspect’s vehicle crashed at Interstate 170 and Interstate 70. The suspect ran from the scene of the accident and the Pine Lawn officer chased the suspect on foot.
The officer caught up to the suspect and a struggle began.
Authorities said the suspect was shot and killed during the struggle.
"We have no reason to believe our officer did anything wrong at this point," said Gray. "But we are going to allow the independent investigation to either confirm or refute that belief that we have."
The southbound Interstate 170 ramp onto westbound Interstate 70 was shut down between 3:00 a.m. and about 7:50 a.m. while officers investigated the shooting.
