(KMOV) – Kirkwood’s city council will vote tonight on a proposed law that would ban texting and driving no matter the age of the driver.
The ban was proposed by city council member Nancy Luetzow. If the law passes, Kirkwood wouldn’t be the first to ban texting and driving.
Florissant, Manchester, and St. John have similar bans in place. In Missouri, only drivers under the age of 21 can be ticketed for texting and driving.
Illinois has a statewide ban unless the phone is hands-free.
If the ban passes, the maximum penalty is a fine of $1,000 or even six months in jail which is dependent on a judge’s ruling.
