(KMOV) – Governor Nixon will sign a bill today that allows first responders to carry and use the heroin antidote Narcan in case of overdose.

Nixon will sign the bill at the House Springs Fire Department. Firefighters are part of the group that will be allowed to administer the drug.

Paramedics, police officers, and EMTs will also be able to give Narcan injections.

This change will not immediately take effect. According to St. Louis County Police, further steps need to be taken before officers can use Narcan.
