( – A St. Charles man who was accused of faking his own death after being blackmailed by his girlfriend was sentenced to four years in prison on Monday.

Raymond Avett, 46, pleaded guilty in St. Charles County Circuit Court to concealing a felony.

Avett was blackmailed by his girlfriend Jennifer L. Callaway so that she would not report sexual abuse allegations against him.

Police say a relative of Callaway’s was told on May 27, 2013 about the alleged abuse of a 6-year-old. An entry in the girl’s diary suggested Avett performed a sex act on her.

Police say Callaway coerced Avett into giving her his $120,000 home, SUV, boat and life insurance in exchange for not telling police about the alleged sexual assault.

Callaway was sentenced to five years' probation in January after pleading guilty to concealing a felony. She was also ordered to undergo psychological and alcohol abuse evaluations and must have no unsupervised contact with minors.

St. Charles County Prosecutor Tim Lohmar says Avett was never charged with a sex crime because Callaway’s failure to report the crime took away his office’s ability to properly investigate the case.
