ST. LOUIS, Mo. (KMOV) – Authorities have arrested a registered sex offender who had been on the run for nearly a year after escaping from a local halfway house in 2013.

U.S. Marshals tell News 4 Frederick Buettner was taken into custody Monday night at a gas station at Grand and Alberta in south St. Louis.  A woman who happened to stop at the gas station for a soda noticed Buettner working there.

She immediately went to the Facebook page dedicated to finding the man and showed a nearby officer his picture.

Buettner had shaved his beard and dyed and cut his hair.

Buettner in 2004 pleaded guilty to raping his daughter when she was between the ages of 3 and 5. He was imprisoned in Feb. 2005 on a 10-year sentence, but was released in May, 2013.

Authorities say he was at Another Chance Ministry, a halfway house in East St. Louis, on July 8, 2013, when he simply cut off an ankle monitor used for electronic monitoring and walked away.

“He’s a dangerous individual and no one is safe as long as he is out there,” Heather Claxton, the mother of Buettner’s daughter, told News 4 in July.

Buettner was only six weeks into his parole at the time.

Buettner will face felony federal charges for failing to comply with sex offender requirements, a source tells News 4.
