(KMOV) – The St. Charles Election Office says 600 signatures for a St. Charles man’s chance to be put on the November ballot to be elected to St. Charles County Sheriff were not turned in, but a former employee says the signatures could have disappeared.

“I believe the Director of Elections once told me the condition of the Assistant Director of Elections’ desk is a sin,” said Katherine Runyan, a former employee. “I did hear something about the election authority not being able to find all of his signatures.”

Steve Abbington says he turned in the 600 signatures back in May to be put on the November ballot, but was told the signatures were never turned in. Abbington needs more than 1900 signatures for the ballots and Runyan believes all this has happened because of discrimination.

“I don’t believe there is respect for his culture, especially on the part of the Assistant Director,” Runyan said. “I believe that she was the one that did the paperwork for him for his filing.”

"I feel that there is no justice done," Abbington said. "You have a director who won't honor his word."

Elections Director Rich Chrismer was asked to comment on the incident, but declined.
