(BaseballStL) -- As the Cardinals wait to make a move this offseason, the Cubs and Reds are letting it be known that they have plans to improve for this offseason.
According to MLBTradeRumors.com, the Cubs were close to landing Dan Haren in a trade that would have sent Carlos Marmol to the Angels. Now the team is rumored to be in the market for starters Brandon McCarthy and Shaun Marcum.
It wouldn’t be a big surprise if the Cubs did make a move for a solid starting pitcher this offseason after shedding several contracts from last season -- not to mention this is the second year of Theo Epstein in Chicago. A move would definitely not be surprising.
McCarthy, who will turn 30 in July, has pitched well over the past two seasons for the A’s. Last season, he posted an 8-6 record with a 3.24 ERA but missed the final month of the season and postseason after taking a line drive off his head.
Reds general manager Walt Jocketty stated the team hopes to re-sign Ryan Ludwick this winter. Ludwick declined a $5 million mutual option with the Reds after posting a .275 batting average with 26 home runs and 80 RBI.
The Reds are also planning on moving Aroldis Chapman to the starting rotation if the team acquires a relief pitcher this offseason. Chapman converted 38-of-43 saves this season and struck out 122 batters in 71.2 innings pitched.
