Former Festus school janitor sentenced for raping, sodomizing 10-year-old girl

FESTUS, Mo. (KMOV) – A former janitor in the Festus School District has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for sexually assaulting a 10-year-old girl.
Michael E. Burgess, 48, pleaded guilty to charges of statutory sodomy and rape. He was sentenced on November 2nd.
In addition to prison, Burgess will remain on the sex offender registry and be under supervision the rest of his life.
Burgess used to be an evening janitor at the Festus lower elementary school. Police said the 10-year-old victim did not attend school in the same building where Burgess worked. Instead, Burgess was a friend of the victim’s family. Police said the offense did not occur on the school property where Burgess worked.
After the encounter, the victim told her parents what happened. After an evaluation at a hospital, police obtained warrants and Burgess was arrested on December 17th, 2011.
