(KMOV) – Five children and two adults suffered injuries Tuesday after a five-vehicle accident shortly before 4 p.m. on Highway 161 near Radio Range Road. This is also near Belleville, Illinois and Scott Air Force Base.

According to officials, the only serious injury was to an adult female driver of a minivan that was hit head on. The woman was airlifted to a nearby hospital; she is expected to survive.

Authorities say the 17-year-old driver of one of the vehicles drifted over the center line and collided head-on with the minivan. This caused a chain reaction as three other vehicles then hit the other cars.

There were five children in her minivan. Four were children of her own,.

The teen driver was treated at the scene and ticketed for improper lane usage.
