Belleville, Ill., (KMOV) – Homeowners in St. Clair County are puzzled at their skyrocketing property taxes.

Every county in the St. Louis area reports a decline in residential property values averaging about 4.5%, but some homeowners in St. Clair county report a 40% spike in their property taxes.

Bob Heet, a retired veteran living on a fixed income, worries if he’ll be able to afford his house. His property taxes jumped after his property’s assessed value shot up 41% from $61,000 to $87,000 on a declining neighborhood.

St. Clair County assessor Jennifer Gomric Minton said, some assessments went up because homes were previously undervalued, and that her office tries to be fair. She also said homeowners can appeal their home’s assessed value.

Heet did appeal, but his appeal was denied without explanation.
