ST. LOUIS (KMOV/AP) -- Quick-thinking neighbors are credited with saving a woman and her daughter, who jumped from the third floor of a burning St. Louis apartment.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that the child jumped into the arms of a neighbor; the woman jumped onto a mattress that neighbors dragged to the 1400 block of Hogan.
The fire broke out around 8 a.m. Tuesday on the building's second floor, trapping the woman and her daughter a floor above.
Neighbors pulled a mattress to the apartment and told the mother and child, who is about 6, to jump. A neighbor caught the girl.
The woman hurt her leg. Another woman and a man, along with the mother and daughter, were taken for treatment, and a rescuer burned his hand.
The cause of the fire was accidental according to the St. Louis Fire Department. Firefighters believe a lamp was knocked onto a couch.
