St. Louis police partners with community organizations to offer free gun locks

(KMOV) -- The Metropolitan Police Department, City of St. Louis, Project ChildSafe and Child Safety Day are teaming up to distribute free cable-style gun locks and gun safety information to citizens on August 10 for “Project Gun Safety: A Smart Gun Owner is a Safe Gun Owner.”

Gun locks will be available at 2832 Arsenal, 1530 Lafayette Avenue and 3700 Union Boulevard from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. or until supplies are depleted.

Cable-style gun locks require a weapon to be unloaded with the magazine removed.  Simply unloading but not locking a weapon is not a sufficient safety precaution, as children who find unloaded weapons might also find ammunition or may remove the weapons from the residence.

Cable-style gun locks prevent a gun from being loaded and can reduce the chances of a child becoming the victim of a gun accident.

The gun locks were provided to the department at no cost by Project ChildSafe, a gun safety initiative supported by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives, the National Shooting Sports Foundation and the Department of Justice.

This event is being held as a precursor to Child Safety Day, which is held annually to promote the physical, emotional and social safety of children.

The 2011 Child Safety Day will take place on October 8 in the 6100 block of Delmar.
