New law requires more effort to find lost Illinois pets' owners

(KMOV) – Illinois Animal Control now has to try harder to reunite lost pets with their owners.

Animal Control will now have to scan animals twice for microchips, then contact owners by phone or email. If that does not work, the organization must then try to contact the animal’s vet.

Currently Animal Control only has to send a letter to the owners, but if the owners have recently moved they do not receive the letter.

The law is the last in a series of legislation involving pets supported by Gov. Pat Quinn.

Quinn also fought for a law calling to add a bitter flavor to antifreeze and coolant to prevent animal poisoning.
