Officials debate the need for earthquake insurance in Madison County

(KMOV) – The Madison County Board recently purchased earthquake insurance for the county’s government buildings which would cover approximately one-third of the cost to rebuild damaged buildings.

Board members who voted against spending $87,000 for insurance think the county should have spent less money and re-hired an unemployed back instead.

The value of all government buildings in Madison County is $130 million and insurance would cover $55 million of the damage.

Officials believe the county did not need to purchase full insurance because FEMA would most likely help cover the rest of the cost.
