Illini volleyball team advances to NCAA Sweet 16

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (KMOV) -- One day after defeating Milwaukee in straight sets, the No. 9 University of Illinois women's volleyball team made quick work of the Cincinnati Bearcats in similar fashion.

Illinois defeated Cincinnati in straight sets 26-24, 25-20 and 25-22 Saturday at Huff Hall and advanced to the Sweet 16 in the NCAA Tournament.

In the first set, the Fighting Illini (26-7) jumped out to a 15-10 lead, but Cincinnati tied the game at 21-all and 24-all.

Illinois took the lead on a Laura DeBruler kill and won the first set 26-24 off an attack error by the Bearcats' (27-7) Annie Fesl.

With the second set tied at 20-all, Illinois won the next five points to capture the set 25-20.

In the third set, a kill by Jessica Elley gave Cincinnati an 11-8 advantage, forcing Illinois to take a timeout. The break helped and the Illini reeled off seven straight points and took the lead, 15-11.

The Bearcats fought back to cut the score to 23-20 and suppressed an Illinois victory on the first match point.

Cincinnati's Jessica Nevitt killed a shot that made the score 24-22, but DeBruler won the match for Illinois 25-22 on a kill.

DeBruler led Illinois with 19.5 points and added 12 digs.

Kylie McCulley scored 11 points, and Ashley Edinger recorded 16 digs.

Illinois will play either California or New Mexico State this Friday at 3:30 p.m. at Rec Hall in State College, Pa.
