Complaint says money from pre-paid services was improperly used

Illinois Comptroller Dan Hynes has begun the process of revoking the pre-need services license of the owners of Valley View Cemetery, in the wake of word from its employees that they have been fired and the cemetery shut down.

The state action came on Friday, less than a week after Carol Lynn Horton came to Edwardsville and drove off with maintenance equipment that apparently belonged to her father, Hillman Crowell, who died in February.

The 15-page complaint says that Crowell's company, Mid-America Growth and Development Corp., used money from pre-paid burial and funeral services to maintain its cemeteries in Edwardsville, Belleville and Missouri.
