Audit: Overtime spike at Ill. Dept. of Corrections

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- A state audit shows overtime more than doubled from 2006 to 2008 at the Illinois Department of Corrections.

The audit released this week looks at July 1, 2006 through June 30, 2008. That was under the administration of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

During 2006's budget year, about $23.7 million was spent on overtime and compensatory time. That jumped to $84.6 million by 2008.

An employee union claims the overtime jump is because of inadequate staffing.

The American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees predicts the issue will get worse if proposed employee layoffs go through.

The audit also says the department racked up approximately $10.6 million more in expenses than it was authorized to spend. That included $4.3 million for utilities.
