Firefighters rushed to the apartment after receiving a 911 call around 4 a.m. Saturday.

The children's grandmother met the crews in the parking lot, waving her arms to alert them that children were inside.

Firefighters found 4-year-old Devonte Mitchell in a bedroom with his 21-month-old sister, C-Mya Mitchell.

Their 6-year-old brother, Darryl Mitchell, was found near the hallway of the apartment.

The children's father and grandmother suffered burns trying to get to the children. They were treated at a hospital and released.

Fire Capt. Rich Hilligardt says two smoke detectors in the apartment both contained dead batteries.

Firefighters suspect the blaze started in the kitchen.
