(KMOV) -- A three-year-old girl has died after she was hit in the head by a stray bullet in Owensville, Missouri.
According to Gasconade County Sheriff Randy Esphorst, Allison Schneider died late Tuesday afternoon.
The shooting incident happened around 12:20 p.m. on Monday in the 3600 block of Highway EE.
Authorities said that the shot was fired by a neighbor who had been taking target practice with his 9mm handgun. The neighbor has not been charged, but the investigation is ongoing.
A friend of Allison’s family told News 4 that the Allison was visiting a friend when the incident occured. She was reportedly walking with that friend and her brother to see horses on Monday. While they were walking she was struck by the bullet. She was apparently holding her friend’s hand as she fell to the ground.
When Allision was airlifted from the scene, the helicopter had to stop in Creve Coeur because fluid was filling her lungs. They then went on to Children’s Hospital. The bullet was lodged against her brain stem.
