Herman says his resignation will help U of I

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) -- Former University of Illinois Chancellor Richard Herman says he thinks his resignation "clears the way" for the school's Urbana-Champaign campus to "move forward" after a recent scandal over admissions practices.

In an interview Sunday with The News-Gazette of Champaign, Herman told the newspaper he didn't think the school could move past the scandal with either himself or President B. Joseph White in place. White decided last month to leave in December.

Herman also says it will help the school that now there will be "a certain amount of vigilance required" for admissions.

Herman resigned last Tuesday following months of pressure over special attention the school paid to politically connected applicants. Trustees accepted his resignation Friday.
