Sheriff: Unregistered sex offender tried to tie up 15-year-old

CHANNELVIEW, Texas—A 70-year-old sex offender has been arrested after deputies say he tried to hold a 15-year-old girl hostage inside his RV.

According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, Don Porterfield tried to tie up the teen.

The teen was able to fight back and escaped.

Porterfield was arrested after the Sept. 26 incident. Neighbors at the Skunk Hill RV Park said they soon learned that they had been living near a predator for months.

Deputies said Porterfield had been living at the park on Woodland Street in Channelview for about six months. He reportedly failed to register his address.

“My heart just fell. I couldn’t breathe. I was like, ‘Oh my gosh,’” explained neighbor Kristy Day. “What if it wasn’t just a 15-year-old? What if it was a toddler that couldn’t fight?”

Porterfield has prior convictions for aggravated sexual assault in 1990 and aggravated rape in 1976.

“I hope he burns in hell. Any man who would hurt a child doesn’t even deserve to walk the face of this earth,” added Day.

Investigators said the 15-year-old girl knows Porterfield. Her relationship with the 70-year-old is unclear.

The landlord at the Skunk Hill RV Park said he didn’t know that Porterfield had such a troubling criminal history. He also claims he didn’t know that Porterfield was a sex offender.

“It bothers me. Then again, they don’t make them register,” said James, blaming state and local law enforcement. The landlord did not provide his full name.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said Porterfield was required by law to register within seven days of moving.

According to Texas DPS, there are approximately 70,000 sex offenders in the state of Texas. Of that number, about 2,000 have unknown addresses.

“The school is not that far from here either. There are kids all over here,” said neighbor Meagain Starky.

Neighbors here want confirmation that Porterfield isn’t coming back.

He is charged with aggravated kidnapping and failure to register as a sex offender.
