ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – Metro riders will now see new fare boxes on 40 of its buses.
The new boxes will feature a display that will show how much money riders have inserted and the balance they owe. There is also a place on top of the boxes for riders to slide their pass.
Metro officials said some delays should be expected, as the new boxes have trouble recognizing damages or torn bills. Metro recommended drivers use crisp new dollars for faster boarding.
Officials said the new boxes will help keep more accurate passenger counts, reduce the number of riders who try to get on for free and help Metro transition to a paperless smart-car fare system.
