Rams praise K Zuerlein following 19-13 win over Seahawks

ST. LOUIS (FootballStL) -- There isn’t a lot of time to soak in Sunday’s 19-13 victory over the Seahawks considering the team has to play again on Thursday, but a lot of the praise in the locker room following the game went to kicker Greg Zuerlein.

Zuerlein was perfect on four field goal attempts, including 60-yard and 58-yard attempts, and matched the Seahawks total points by himself.

“Our kicker is the MVP of the season right now,” running back Steven Jackson said.  “He is doing a great job.  Pretty much all we have to do is get across the 50-yard line and we are within his range.”

It came as a surprise to some that Zuerlein was called upon to attempt a 60-yard field goal early in the third quarter.  One of those surprised by the gutsy call was quarterback Sam Bradford, who was 16-for-30 for 221 yards with an interception.

“I was coming off the field expecting us to punt it and I looked back out there and we were setting up for a field goal and I was like ‘what?’” Bradford said.  “But sure enough, he has been awesome. You can’t ask for much more in a kicker and I am sure that he is going to continue to play great for us.”

Despite a lot of time left in the game, Fisher was going to use Zuerlein because he knew the rookie kicker could make it.

““I was on the headsets and I said, ‘Field goal,’ and somebody said ‘Field goal?’ I said, ‘Yeah, it’s only 60. It’s well within his range,’” Fisher recalled.  “From the first day he came on the field, he expects to make it.  He has great confidence in his leg.  The other thing that’s important to realize is we have a really fine snapper and holder and it takes three to put these things down and to put them together.”

Zuerlein’s make from 58 yards out in the second quarter set a team record that was previously held by Jeff Wilkins who kicked a 57-yard field goal in 1998.  ‘The Leg’ quickly broke his own record early in the third quarter with the 60-yard field goal.

“I think, really, it says more about the coaching staff than it does about me,” Zuerlein said.  “I feel a lot of kickers in the NFL can kick from those distances and make them.  It just depends on the faith that the coaches have.  Coach (John) Fassel and Coach Fisher are giving me the chances and I think that is the biggest thing.”

This season Zuerlein has been perfect in 12 attempts.  He was drafted in the sixth round of this year’s NFL Draft.
