Madison County, Ill. (KMOV.com) – Authorities are searching for woman who allegedly used children to steal about $100,000 worth of jewelry from a store in Granite City.
Investigators say Geneshia L. Grey on Aug. 27 walked into the Hurley and Company Jewelry store in the 3100 block of West Chain of Rocks Road in Granite City with two children.
Authorities say a review of surveillance video shows that Grey distracted a sales person and then directed the children to grab boxes of jewelry out of the display cases. The Madison County Sheriff’s Department says the children allegedly dropped the stolen jewelry into the woman's purse and bag before leaving the store.
Investigators are looking for Grey and believe she may be in the East St. Louis area.
While police allege Grey’s young family members helped with the heist, authorities say it was another family member that tipped them off to the scheme.
On Tuesday, Madison County Deputies were dispatched to a report of a disturbance between Grey and a family member at a home near the jewelry store. That family member gave deputies a plastic bag containing 69 empty jewelry boxes and said Grey was involved in some sort of criminal activity.
Investigators tracked the boxes back to the jewelry store. The store had not reported the jewelry missing because it was trying to determine exactly what happened and when. A review of the security tape revealed Grey’s alleged scheme.
Authorities say they have only recovered about $10,000 of the $100,000 worth of jewelry Grey allegedly stole.
