Police investigating officer-involved shooting near McKendree University

(KMOV)-- Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting at an apartment complex near McKendree University.

This happened around noon Wednesday in the Lebanon Apartments at 410 Summerfield Street, about two blocks from the university.

Police were investigating a one vehicle traffic crash that occurred on the ramp of I-64 eastbound at Illinois Route 158, which knocked down a street light.

A police officer observed a vehicle matching the suspect's vehicle description at the Lebanon Apartments. Officers made contact with a 25-year-old male resident. While officers were completing the traffic crash report, the subject entered his apartment at which time officers heard a gunshot. Officers entered the commons area of the apartment building at which time the subject exited his apartment with a firearm.

An officer fired once striking the suspect in the abdomen. The subject was taken into custody and then transported to a Belleville area hospital, where he refused treatment. The subject remains in custody at this time. The investigation continues

According to the university, the school sent out a warning system to its students and staff around 12:15 p.m. The school is open.
