Rams sign running back

(KMOV) -- The Rams have signed running back Chauncey Washington off the New York Jets practice squad. He was needed with Steven Jackson nursing the groin strain. Assuming Washington passes his physical, he'll be added to the active roster today.

Washington led Southern California in rushing in 2006 and 2007. He was considered a star in the making at USC, but ran into academic and injury problems. He was a 7th round draft pick by Jacksonville in 2008, but hasn't been able to land a regular job as a running back in stints with the Jaguars, Dallas and the NY Jets. For his career he has only four carries for nine yards. He's considered a very good special teams player. Washington will likely take the roster spot of Dominique Curry, who's out for the season with a serious knee injury.

Signing Washington makes sense for the Rams, but you have to hope he's not the guy they're counting on to replace Steven Jackson. I think they should turn it over to Kenneth Darby for this Sunday, give him at least one game where he's the feature back who gets lots of work, and then go from there. We don't know yet how long Jackson will be out. It doesn't make sense to me to rush him back a week early and risk losing him for an extended period of time. Why not let Jackson take this Sunday's game against Seattle off, rest the groin strain, and hopefully have him back the following Sunday. If he's iffy at all, there's no sense putting him at risk to do more serious damage to the groin. Darby at 100% has to be better than Jackson at 50%. If he's not, they need to keep looking for a back-up running back. It's not a matter of "if" your feature running back will get hurt, it's "when". They almost all get banged up over the course of the season and need some recovery time. The Rams top priority right now needs to be finding Jackson's back-up and/or future replacement at the position. Why not find out right now if Darby can be the guy. It seems unlikely Chauncey Washington will be the quality back the Rams need, otherwise why would he just be on the Jets practice squad after being released by both the Jags and Cowboys. Makes sense to sign Washington right now, but hopefully the Rams won't stop at this signing. They still need to make a move to get a quality back-up running back.
