Metro-East officer shoots, kills pit bull

SOUTH ROXANA, Ill. (AP) -- Police in the southwestern Illinois village of South Roxana say an officer shot and killed a pit bull that attacked him.

South Roxana Police Chief Dennis Carpenter says the encounter happened Sunday in the Madison County community.

Carpenter says the officer and an animal-control specialist were dispatched to a report of a dog running loose when the pit bull jumped on the officer.

The officer shot the dog once, then again at the animal's owner's request so the dog wouldn't suffer.

Carpenter says the dog's owner would be issued a summons for violating the village's leash ordinance.
