Grief counselors to be on hand after Sumner student shot, killed

(KMOV) -- Grief counselors will be on hand Monday at Sumner High School after a student was shot to death Friday afternoon.

It happened in the 4000 block of West Belle Place. Witnesses told police Rahmel McNeil was shot after a fight around 1:30 p.m. A gunman involved in the fight opened fire and shot the high school senior as he walked away. Rahmel McNeil died several hours later at the hospital.

McNeil is described by his friends as a hardworking student and a great football player.

Sumner High School canceled their football game on Friday, after learning of McNeil's murder.

Teammates told News4 that McNeil played defense. He was a middle linebacker for the Sumner Bulldogs.

Police say they have strong leads in the case, but no arrests have been made yet.  St. Louis Police ask anyone with information to call Crimestoppers at 1-866-371-TIPS.

Glenda Thornton, a member of the Sumner Alumni Association and a school volunteer, says McNeil is survived by a twin sister, his mom, and dad. Thornton says she will set up a fund to accept donations to help the family pay for the high school senior's funeral service. We will pass on that information once the fund is set up.
