We made a big move this weekend at the Spriggs house - we moved my almost two-year-old Jude from his crib into his big boy bed! I was very nervous about this transition, but it went surprisingly well. I had heard horror stories from friends about their kids refusing to sleep in their toddler beds. I heard it all...kids playing with toys instead of sleeping, kids escaping from their rooms in the middle of the night. Even my own mom told me that when she moved me out of the crib, she had to lay down next to me until I fell asleep for months after the transition. I had prepared myself for the worst. But, as usual, Jude took me by surprise.
So Friday night, we made the move. We did our normal bedtime routine - jammies, brushing our teeth, bedtime stories and then bedtime prayers. We gave Jude hugs and kisses, tucked him into his bed and said goodnight. Then, my husband and I waited. We sat at the door and listened. We just knew we'd hear him up playing with toys or trying to open his bedroom door. Instead, we heard nothing. We went in to check on him and there he was, asleep! It was that easy - what a relief!
It has been a smooth transition. Every night Jude goes right to sleep and every afternoon he takes his usual nap. He stays in his bed like a champ. Even in the morning, when he wakes up, he doesn't get out of his bed until mommy or daddy comes in his room. I'm no expert at this parenting thing, but I think the anticipation of the big boy bed is what made this whole thing so easy. We moved the bed into his room about a month ago and kept talking about it. We let him sit in his bed and read books in his bed, but he didn't sleep in it. I think that when he finally got to sleep in it, he was so excited that he didn't want to get out. Hopefully it stays that way.
For something that I was dreading for weeks, everything turned out just fine! I'm so proud of my big boy!
