The locally based Parents as Teachers organization is getting millions of dollars in stimulus money to help narrow the education deficit for Native American children in six states. Missouri does not directly benefit, but the group hopes a heightened fundraising profile will translate into additional donations and more scholarships offered for local programs.
While talking to officials there, I learned more about Parents as Teachers. There are programs in China, where it is offered as a perk for parents who patronize a particular company. In New Zealand, it is mandatory for first time parents. In Germany, it is used primarily to assist immigrant families. I found it interesting to hear how a program originated right here in St. Louis is being used around the world.
