ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Albert Pujols is being held out of the St. Louis Cardinals' lineup due to soreness in his left elbow.
Pujols had a cortisone injection Monday night and team medical staff decided he should sit out of Tuesday night's game against the Chicago Cubs.
Manager Tony La Russa says Pujols needs a break to let the injury calm down, and the three-time NL MVP is day to day.
Pujols was injured trying to make a diving play earlier this month and has complained of soreness lately.
Pujols leads the National League with 39 homers and 104 RBIs and is seventh in hitting with a .308 average, heading into Tuesday's games.
Colby Rasmus batted third in place of Pujols and Felipe Lopez played first base.
