Teen dies from injuries in massive wreck

POPLAR BLUFF, Mo. (AP) -- An 18-vehicle accident in southeast Missouri on Labor Day has now claimed a life.

The Southeast Missourian reports that 18-year-old Jaclyn K. King of Poplar Bluff died Saturday at a Cape Girardeau hospital from injuries suffered in the accident five days earlier.

King was a passenger in a car driven by 17-year-old Aaron S. Hamlin of Kennett that was involved in the Sept. 6 accident.

Twenty-six people were hurt in the chain-reaction wreck caused by thick, black smoke from a brush fire along U.S. 60 near Dexter in Stoddard County. Authorities said the smoke was so thick that drivers couldn't see.

Nine of the 18 vehicles involved were destroyed, six had extensive damage and three had minor damage.
