Fire investigators are looking into the cause of a fire that destroyed a church that was under construction.

Flames ripped through the Miracle Deliverance Temple's new church building in the 2000 block of Cynthia Street in Cahokia early Sunday morning.

Construction was nearly complete on the $300,000 facility, but electricity was not hooked up to the building yet - according to the church pastor.

"The fire marshal let me know that they're leaning toward... it's an arson. Somebody did this purposely," said Pastor Keith Gray.

For years, the congregation collected funds to pay for construction of a new church building and made plans to move into the facility next spring.

The old church building is located next to the new construction. For now, services will continue in the older building.

Pastor Gray says the church is insured and his congregation will move forward with plans to rebuild.

"In times like these, we are not to hang our heads low because the God we serve is able to cause us to rise up out of the ashes."
