SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- The Illinois Department on Aging is marking National Grandparents Day with an offer of help for grandparents who are raising their grandchildren.
National Grandparents Day is Sunday.
Aging department Director Charles Johnson estimates that more than 100,000 grandparents in Illinois are caring for their grandchildren. And more than 200,000 minors are living in households headed by grandparents.
The department's Grandparents Raising Grandchildren program provides financial help for emergencies, utility bills, food and clothing.
And the state gives grants to nonprofit organizations through the program for legal assistance, child care, training and support groups.
More than $300,000 in grants was awarded in fiscal year 2010.
