(KMOV) -- A soldier who gave his life in the war on terror was laid to rest Saturday.
A large crowd gathered outside the high school in DeSoto, Mo., to say goodbye to Staff Sgt. James Ide, including Gov. Jay Nixon.
The 32-year-old from Festus was a father of two who was killed in Afghanistan when his unit came under small arms fire on Aug. 29. Ide was one of seven killed that day during insurgent attacks.
Members of the Westboro Baptist Church from Wichita, Kansas, made a brief counter-protest. The church and its pastor are known for holding up signs near soldier's funerals. As they drove away, the crowd cheered.
