(KMOV) -- Police say they have a person of interest in connection with a carjacking outside a truck stop in Alorton, Illinois.

The incident happened around 2:00 a.m. Thursday at the Flying J truck stop located at 140 Racehorse Drive, just east of I-255.

A clerk on duty said a man who frequents the area and begs for money approached a woman loading clothes into a white Chevy Malibu.

“She turned and, as she did, she was struck from the rear and went to the ground. At the time the suspect took her car along with her dog,” said Gary Brewer of the Metro East Auto Task Force.

He then pulled her out of her vehicle and hit her multiple times.

Police said the woman confronted the suspect as he started to back up her vehicle and was knocked to the ground by her own car door.

Surveillance video that caught of the end of the incident shows the car door was still open and the trunk lid up as the suspect raced out of the parking lot in reverse. Police would not say whether that suspect was the same as the person of interest in custody.

He was last seen heading eastbound on Illinois Route 15.

Emergency crews responded to the scene and took the victim to an area hospital in unknown condition.

The woman told police the car she was in was a rental. That car was found less than a mile from the truck stop with the woman’s dog still inside in good condition.
